What to expect when you volunteer for a Beach Clean-up

Volunteering for a beach clean-up is a rewarding way to contribute to the health of our planet and enjoy time outdoors. If you’re considering lending a hand for the first time, you might be wondering what exactly the experience involves. Here’s a guide to help you prepare for the day and ensure that your contribution is as impactful and enjoyable as possible.

Before the Event:

  • Register: ensure that you’ve signed up through the appropriate channels. This helps organizers prepare enough supplies and plan for the number of participants.
  • Waivers: if required, complete any waivers or consent forms ahead of time to streamline the check-in process on the day of the event.

What to Bring:

  • Reusable Water Bottle*: stay hydrated with water, especially if it’s a warm day. Avoid single-use plastics to keep in line with the eco-friendly spirit of the event.
  • Sun Protection: Sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat are essential to protect you from UV rays.
  • Appropriate Clothing: wear long sleeves and pants to protect your skin from the sun and any debris. Clothes may get dirty or wet, so wear something you don’t mind getting a little roughed up.
  • Sturdy Footwear: closed-toed shoes are a must. Sandals or flip-flops won’t protect your feet from sharp objects.
  • Snacks*: bring energy-boosting snacks, especially if you’re participating for several hours.

* If you’re participating in our Nazaré Beach-Clean event, we will be providing energising SAVG Energy and REFIX drinks as well as a nutritious snack during the afternoon, courtesy of Açaí Tia Lu.

How to Dress:

  • Layers: conditions can change quickly at the beach. Dress in layers that you can add or remove as needed.
  • Gloves: durable gloves protect your hands from sharp objects and potential irritants. Sometimes these are provided, but it’s good to bring your own just in case.

During the Event:

  • Check-in: arrive early to check in, receive instructions, and collect supplies like trash bags and data cards (if the clean-up is also a survey).
  • Safety Briefing: pay attention to the safety briefing. This will cover what to do if you find hazardous waste, how to lift heavy items properly, and the day’s objectives.
  • Team Up: you might be assigned to a team. If not, consider teaming up with others. It’s safer and more fun to work in groups.

What You’ll Encounter:

  • Various Waste: expect to find common items like cigarette butts, plastic bottles, and food wrappers. you may also encounter unusual or large items.
  • Wildlife: you’re likely to see birds, crabs, or even marine life. Remember to keep a safe distance and never attempt to touch or move any animals.
  • Different Roles: depending on the event, you may be asked to sort recyclables, tally items, or help with hauling collected waste to disposal points.

After the Event:

  • Disposal: follow the organizers’ instructions for disposing of the collected waste.
  • Feedback: there might be a debrief session where you can share your experience and provide feedback.
  • Celebrate: often, there’s a small gathering after the clean-up to thank volunteers and celebrate the collective effort.

Post Clean-up:

  • Stay Involved: if you enjoyed the experience, ask the organizers how you can help with future events.
  • Advocacy: share your experience with friends and family and encourage them to participate in future clean-ups.
  • A beach clean-up can be a transformative experience, not just for the environment, but for you as an individual. You’ll leave with a sense of accomplishment, knowing you’ve made a tangible difference in preserving the natural beauty of our coastlines.

So grab a bag, put on your gloves, and get ready to make a positive impact on your local beach—and perhaps inspire others to do the same!
